We have had a few days off for Shabbat when no games take place for any of the Maccabi teams in true Shabbat fashion. Much of Jerusalem shuts down for these days of rest as well. Still, we took advantage of this time to see some of the major sites such as Masada, the Dead Sea (the physics of the salt content and resulting flotation dynamics are real and pretty cool to experience), Ein Gedi (waterfalls), and the old city in Jerusalem. Combining the learning of and appreciation for my homeland with a truly world class athletic event is what makes my first trip to Israel so unique. I look forward to learning more about this great country, its people, and its politics in my remaining time here. I also look forward to continuing to compete in my sport on a global stage alongside so many incredible athletes.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the sad and sudden passing of my Uncle Bub last night. I was fortunate to be with my cousin Matt when we learned of this. He was a very special person in my life, especially after the passing of my father, his brother. I hope to be able to honor him and comfort my family more formally soon. In the meantime, the best thing I could do was to say the Mourner’s Kaddish at the Western Wall and leave a prayer for him in its bricks. It was a somber yet powerfully special moment today. He will be in my thoughts always but especially in the coming days.
